Master modules-The control surface engines
Master modules are the central hubs of your S6 surface. All surfaces must include a main engine, which provides touchscreen access and control; you have a choice between two-S6 M40 or S6 M10. The S6 Automation Module complements both, providing controls for transport, automation, and more. Here's a closer look at these modules.
M40 vs. M10-The engine you choose dictates the number of total modules you can include in your S6, and impacts its overall size and customizability. Choose the high-performance M40 for large-scale productions that require maximum faders and channels, high-resolution metering, and customizability, or the more affordable M10 for productions that need to fit into smaller rooms and budgets.
Both feature a tilting 12.1-inch multipoint touchscreen, eight adjacent rotary encoders, and dedicated knobs and keys for monitoring and global control, enabling you to view, access, and edit different aspects of your mix-such as tracks, processing, and metering-without mousing through menus.
S6 M10
Avid S6 M10 control surfaces are available as preconfigured systems with 8, 16 or 24 faders. All three M10 configurations feature a Master Touch and Automation Module, in addition to Fader, Processor and Knob Modules, with a maximum of five knobs per channel and ten modules per control surface. The M10 can also control up to two Eucon-enabled workstations simultaneously.
S6 M40
Avid S6 M40 control surfaces are available as preconfigured systems with 16, 24 or 32 faders, or as a bespoke system with up to 64 faders. Custom configured M40 systems can be expanded horizontally or vertically over time when more modules are required, up to a maximum of 41 modules. The M40 has a larger processor than the M10, which allows configurations up to a maximum of nine knobs per channel. The M40 is also the only configuration that can host the TFT Display Meter Module. It can also control up to eight Eucon-enabled workstations simultaneously.
Display Module (S6 M40 only)
The Display Module provides 8-channels of high resolution TFT displays that show metering as well as EQ and dynamic function curves. It can also display waveforms directly from the timeline, with visual indications of the regions on the track. Channel names, routing, groups and DAW affiliation can are also displayed.
Automation Module
The Automation Module provides a complete transport section for writing automation and navigating projects, a multi-function shuttle/job wheel, user programmable soft keys, the attention fader, colour shortcut displays and switches, a numeric keypad and more. Pre-configured S6 systems include the Automation Module, but it is an optional add on when configuring a custom-built system.
Fader Module
The Fader Module consists of eight motorised faders, each with a high resolution OLED screen displaying track name and automation mode. Each fader features Mute and Solo buttons, Select and Attention keys and additional multi-function buttons for input monitoring and record arming. Dual, tri-colour LED meters are provided per channel, in addition to multi-colour switches that display track colour and function as modifier keys.
Knob Module
The Knob Module features 32 multi-colour LED top-lit knobs (four per channel) and controls the parameters as selected by the Process Module. This is complemented by 32 OLEDs that indicate the selected parameters with visual feedback. The multi-colour LED knobs use colour as an indication of function for features such as Pan, Send, EQ, dynamics, Inserts, Input, Busses and Groups. The 11 function select switches per channel are also provided with colour LEDs. Each Knob Module can control the functions of up to 32 encoder values, and two Knob Modules can be combined for control of up to nine knobs per channel (S6 M40 configuration only).
Joystick Module
S6 Joystick Module—This master module is an option for both M10- and M40-based S6 systems and offers dual non-motorised, touch-sensitive joysticks for surround sound mixing, enabling you to position sound anywhere within a room. A 3.2-inch TFT display shows current pan and joystick locations. The module also features two multicolor LED top-lit encoders, 16 panning mode switches with color LEDs, and other panning control switches for controlling positioning, divergence, and more with precision. Plus, four OLED displays provide detailed visual feedback and info. The Joystick Module can also be used to control any other knob parameter on S6 to create a wide range of effects.
Post Module
S6 Post Module – a sound mixing/monitoring option designed to speed the completion of post projects. Enables switching between recorded tracks/stems and their inputs and punching into record. The Post Module offers two rows of 10 PEC/DIRECT paddles, each with solo and mute buttons and an OLED to view track/stem names. Stems can be spilled onto adjacent paddles for individual control and Soft Keys created to perform tasks instantly. Enables switching between monitors and dim, cut, or folding down the mix. VCA support on the paddles facilitates control of over 200 tracks with ease.
Master Module
The Display Module provides 8-channels of high resolution TFT displays that show metering as well as EQ and dynamic function curves. It can also display waveforms directly from the timeline, with visual indications of the regions on the track. Channel names, routing, groups and DAW affiliation can are also displayed.
Process Module
The Process Module consists of eight multi-colour LED top lit knobs and an OLED displaying visual feedback. This is in addition to the 22 function select switches per individual channel, also with colour LEDS. These knobs default to Pan per fader channel, but can also can control Sends, EQ, dynamics and other functions. The Process Module also controls the functions of the Knob Module and up to nine simultaneous encoder values.
